Transparency
We believe in being completely open about how we operate, how we make money, and what data we collect. No fine print, no hidden agendas.
Independent & Community-Driven
A passion project, not a venture-backed startup
DomainDetails.com is run by Julian Engel and Simple Bytes. We started this project in 2023 because we saw a gap in free, accessible domain research tools.
Since 2023
Actively maintained and continuously improved with new features and content.
Forever Independent
No outside investors, no corporate interests. We answer only to our users.
Forever Free Core
Our core tools will always remain free. That's a promise, not a marketing tactic.
How We Make Money
Complete breakdown of our revenue sources
Pro Subscriptions
This is our main income source. Pro subscriptions fund development, server costs, and allow us to keep the core tools free for everyone. Features include domain monitoring, change history, and priority support. Our core service (monitoring and alerts) has been profitable from day one.
New Domain Registrations
When a domain is available and you register it through our SpaceShip affiliate link (if you haven't used SpaceShip before), we receive a small commission. This doesn't cost you extra.
Premium Domain Marketplaces
If you purchase a premium domain found through our marketplace search, we may receive an affiliate commission from:
- Afternic (GoDaddy)
- Sedo
- Unstoppable Domains
- Atom
Marketplace Display Order
Prices in the marketplace are always shown in order from lowest to highest. When prices are equal, Afternic listings appear first (they're our primary affiliate partner). We believe in showing you the best deals first, regardless of commission.
Topic-Based Advertising
We may introduce advertising in the future, but it will always be based on the topic of the page (e.g., domain investing, DNS management), never based on user tracking or behavior. Your searches remain private.
What Data We Collect
Analytics to improve our service, nothing more
What We Track (Aggregated, Anonymous)
- Feature usage counts - How many marketplace searches, DNS lookups, bulk searches happen (not what was searched)
- Page views - Which pages and tools are most popular
- Error tracking - When something breaks so we can fix it
- Basic device info - Browser type, screen size (for responsive design improvements)
What We Never Track
- The domains you search - We don't know or store what domains you look up
- Personal information - Unless you create a Pro account (and even then, only what's necessary)
- IP addresses - We don't log or store your IP
Why do we track anything? Simple: to make the product better. If we see that a feature isn't being used, maybe it's not useful or hard to find. If we see lots of errors, we know to prioritize fixes. That's it.
Pro Account Data
If you choose to sync, your data is encrypted
Pro accounts with sync enabled can access their search history across devices. Here's how we handle that data:
- Encrypted at rest - Your synced search history is encrypted in our database
- You control it - Sync is optional. You can disable it anytime and delete all synced data
- Never analyzed - We don't look at, analyze, or use your synced domains for anything
Our Privacy Commitment
Clear promises about your data
We Never Sell Data
Your data is not a product. We don't sell, rent, or share it with third parties.
Local-First Architecture
Your search history stays on your device by default. We never see it.
Respect User Privacy
We designed every feature with privacy as a core requirement, not an afterthought.
No Dark Patterns
No tricks to get you to share more data or click on ads. Everything is straightforward.
Questions?
We believe transparency builds trust. If you have any questions about how we operate, how we make money, or how we handle your data, we're happy to answer.
