How Domain Pricing Works

Domain pricing varies by TLD (top-level domain) and registrar. This tool shows the base registry pricing. For the cheapest registrar comparison, check TLD-List.com which compares prices across all major registrars. We recommend Spaceship as our registrar of choice for competitive pricing and great service.

Registration Price

The initial cost to register a domain for the first year. Some registrars offer promotional pricing for first-year registrations.

Renewal Price

The annual cost to renew your domain after the first year. This is often higher than the registration price and represents the true ongoing cost.

Premium Domains

Some domains are classified as "premium" by the registry itself (not the registrar) due to their perceived value. These premium prices are set at the registry level and will always be at this price or higher - they can increase over time but never decrease. All registrars must charge at least this base premium price.

What Makes a Domain Premium?

  • Short, memorable names (1-3 characters)
  • Common dictionary words
  • High-demand keywords or phrases
  • Previously registered and released domains

Why .COM Domains Are Never Registry Premium

The .com registry (Verisign) does not implement premium pricing at the registry level. All .com domains have the same base price set by the registry (~$9-10/year). However, premium .com domains sold on the aftermarket (previously owned) can cost thousands or millions, but that's secondary market pricing, not registry pricing. This tool shows registry pricing only.

Pricing Tips

  • Compare renewal prices: Some registrars offer low first-year pricing but higher renewal costs.
  • Watch for promotions: Many registrars run seasonal promotions for specific TLDs.
  • Consider long-term registration: Registering for multiple years can lock in current pricing.
  • Premium isn't always better: Premium pricing doesn't guarantee better SEO or traffic.
